It takes talent to be a top-notch player.

But it takes more than talent to be considered among the best. The mental side is just as important as the physical one, and Kaitlyn Terry is the embodiment of that.

Terry is a powerful left-handed pitcher from the Class of 2023, ranked No. 24 overall and as the 14th pitcher by the Fastpitch Network. She’s got all the skills, but those aren’t what distinguish her.

A year ago, she already possessed every skill needed to be great. Then, she made a change in her game that has taken everything to the next level.

“Last year, we spent the year not slapping a lot, to make her a more complete player and develop her power,” said Steve Appel, Daniel’s coach with the Arizona Storm.

Char Lorenz 2023 Indiana Magic Gold

by Kyle Parmley – Fastpitch Network

Char Lorenz is one of the youngest players on Misty Boteler’s Indiana Magic Gold softball team, but that has proven no hindrance for the rising star in the Class of 2023.

Lorenz is ranked as the No. 6 utility player and 19th player overall in her class by the Fastpitch Network, and she’s just getting started.

“She fit right into our group,” said Boteler, who has worked with Lorenz for a few years even before Lorenz joined her team. “She has a lot of potential and she doesn’t even know yet how good she is. She’s pretty humble.”

Not many young players are wise beyond their age to show a sense of loyalty in the modern era of sports.  From the professional athlete to the youth player, migrating from team to team is not an uncommon occurrence.  That was not the choice or case for McKaela Walker.

“One strength that she developed at a very young age was loyalty,” said Todd Mayfield, head coach of the East Cobb Bullets – Mayfield team.  “She’s very loyal to her coaches, loyal to her teammates, and very loyal to the organization she plays for.”

Katie Flannery 2023 Birmingham T-Bolts Roberson

by Kyle Parmley – Fastpitch Network

How many high school student-athletes can say they have been fortunate enough to play with a top recruit in multiple sports at the same time?

The answer is likely a small number, but Katie Flannery is one of those players. On the softball field, she has played with Annabelle Widra, a dynamic two-way player who will soon suit up for the University of Michigan. On the hardwood, Flannery played with and looked up to Sarah Ashlee Barker, one of the best basketball players in the Southeast who is now at the University of Georgia.

Addie Mettler Preps for Competition She Hasn’t Seen Yet

Addie Mettler 2023 Firecrackers Rico-Weil

by Ryan Greenwood – Fastpitch Network

From the time she was young, Addison (Addie) Mettler has been around softball fields. All that time spent around the game helped her acquire a lot of working softball knowledge. That awareness combined with her motivational drive has made her into one of the top 2023 prospects.

“She thinks the game through incredibly well and she learns quickly from her mistakes,” said her dad and former head coach, Greg Mettler.

“The thought that someone out there in the world is working just as hard as me to get that same spot at a great college really motivates me to get better, because it instills competition in me,” stated Addie Mettler. “I know that is my spot and no one is going to take that from me, because I’m going to work ten times harder on the field and in the classroom to get it.”

Kayden Henry uses IQ and Skill to Paint the Future

Kayden Henry 2023

by Ryan Greenwood – Fastpitch Network

When Head Coach Scott Smith was considering moving Kayden Henry on to the Texas Bombers Gold 18U team of older players, he knew she had all the tools to flourish.

“She can do everything. That is rare to have all five tools. She has them all,” said Smith.

Being on a team loaded with talented 2021 and 2022 players headed to Power 5 schools, you would think she would get lost.  She is the only 2023 player on this team.
